Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct. 3:
On the occasion of the 72nd Wildlife Week, being observed from October 2 to 8, the Hon’ble Lt. Governor, Dr. Dinesh Sharma, yesterday flagged off a marathon from the National Memorial Cellular Jail, calling upon the public to contribute towards wildlife conservation and protection of the rich biodiversity of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
This year’s theme, “Connecting Habitats – Thriving Wildlife,” highlights the need to enhance public awareness about wildlife conservation, protection of natural resources and preservation of the rich biodiversity of the Islands. The Hon’ble Lt. Governor also inspected a tableau prepared by the Forest Department, which showcased the rich and diverse flora and fauna found across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The marathon was organised with the objective of spreading the message of wildlife conservation and environmental protection among the people. Participants from different sections of society took part in the marathon with great enthusiasm, reaffirming the collective commitment towards protecting the Islands’ unique natural heritage.
The programme was attended by Shri Gyanesh Bharti, IAS, Chief Secretary; Shri Ravindra Singh Yadav, IPS, Director General of Police; Dr. Sanjay Kumar Sinha, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests; Ms. Chanchal Yadav, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary; Dr. Sachin Shinde, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary; Ms. Purva Garg, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman; Smt. M. Vasanta, Chairperson, SVPMC, along with senior officers of the Administration, Police and Forest Departments, public representatives and participants of the marathon.
