Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct. 6:

Hon’ble Lt. Governor, Dr. Dinesh Sharma Ji, today accorded approval for two important proposals that will directly benefit the fishing community and senior citizens of the region.

A significant initiative has been approved for the fisheries sector in the Nancowrie group of Islands. The establishment of an Ice Plant and Cold Storage facility at Kamorta has been approved, under which an Ice Production Unit will be set up. Upon implementation of the project, Nicobari fishermen in the Nancowrie group of islands, including Teressa, Chowra, Katchal and other nearby islands, will have access to improved ice-making facilities. This will help reduce post-harvest losses, improve fish preservation and marketing, and strengthen the socio-economic conditions and livelihoods of the fishing community.

Similarly, approval has been accorded for the construction of an Old Age Home at Diglipur for identified orphaned elderly persons of North and Middle Andaman. The project will comprise 10 rooms, a hall and a boundary wall, providing senior citizens with safe and dignified accommodation.

The approvals accorded by the Hon’ble Lt. Governor mark a significant step towards the development of the region and the welfare of the people, a press release from Lok Niwas said.
